Get out your bikes, we're reviewing Premium Rush! ZOOOOOOM!
Wilee(Joseph-Gordon Levitt) is the fastest, most extremiest bike messenger in the city. Also, he has bike bullet-time. When he picks up an envelope that dirty detective Bobby Monday(Michael Shannon) is interested in, he has to use all his mad bike skillz to keep it from falling into the wrong hands!
This movie is a special kind of bad. A great kind of awful, if you will. This is just utter ridiculousness extreme biking to the max. Premium Rush is like the movie Hackers, so cheesy bad it's good. And I loved it.
I have to say I'm extremely biased for this movie because I'm a huge Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan. But if you're also a huge Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan, you will not be disappointed! He is at his Gordon-Levittiest while extreming his biking. I feel like I would not enjoy the movie nearly as much if he weren't staring. And for everyone else there's plenty of sweaty biker guys and gals to ogle. The cast also has Michael Shannon playing a great villain role as the crooked cop.
When it gets going, Premium Rush is fast and fun using all the tricks and stunts you'd want to see in a movie like this. They ahve some really cool visuals with his bullet-bike vision and this interesting way of showing the bike routes on an overlayed map. Unfortunately, the movie has a way of flashing back to explain what minor characters were doing before the action started and it really kills the fast-paced energy. It's an interesting technique, but I wish they'd have just gone the linear route and had a nice big chunk of biking action.
It's super cheesy. There's no way to take this movie seriously. He has a biking nemesis and they even have a "bike messengers of the world unite" moment which is silly as all hell. This also feels like a videogame, what with the flashback cutscenes, bullet-bike-stop time mode, stealth mission, and quicktime interrogation event. But if you accept the cheese and like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, it's still a load of fun.
THE GOOD: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, fun and cheesy, Michael Shannon, lot's of toned guys and gals on bikes, crazy action.
THE BAD: Flashback bits that slow up the action.
THE VERDICT: $$$ See it! But also, it may not be for everyone. It's a lot of fun, and it's great when it's fast-paced, but I wouldn't say it's a must-see.
MOVIES LIKE IT: Hackers, Point Break, Cellular, Brick, 500 Days of Summer
ONE SCENE METAPHOR: Seeing his bike-bullet-time for the first time is really fun and funny seeing all the different routes he could take.
